Wednesday Night Hike
June 9, 2010
Circle-All Peak
(Big Cottonwood Canyon)

Weather:  Fairly cloudy - some threat of rain and lightning... not to mention some rain and lightning!
Present were:

Bruce, KI7OM;  Gordon, K7HFV;  Ron, K7RJ;  Josh, KF7ADV;  Melissa, and her husband Andy, KE7UO;  Shauna WB0OQY and her husband Dale, WJ7L;  Kevin and his dad Gary, AB1IP;  Bryan, W7CBM
Destination:  Circle-All Peak
Question(s) of the day:  "What, I can't hear you over the rain/thunder?"
Total distance (GPS):   It varied...
Local sunset on this date:  2058 at an azimuth of 301° - five minutes later and one degree farther north than last week. (The 9th of June had 15:01:53 of daylight at this location, about 6.5 minutes more than a week ago.)
Total 2010 WNH mileage (if you had gone on all of the hikes this year and gone where I did):  4.4 Miles (I didn't go on this one, though...)
Total number of footsteps:  Based on last year's pedometer count, 12408, indicating an average of about 23 inches/step, making for a total of 12408 steps taken by me during the 2010 WNH season.   (Again, I didn't go on this hike.)

Notes:

Due to a run-in with the ever-present and mutating Norovirus, I was unable to attend this hike.  This week's chronicle is from an email to me by Ron, K7RJ:

Clint,

It is late and I have to get up early, but I will be out of town for a few days so I better send this much to you.

We went toward Circle All (or how ever you spell it)

Notice I said "toward". The evening started out cloudy but by the time the lead party had neared the ridge line, the rain was hard and the lightning was just too close for comfort. The flash to boom time was about 2 seconds. Most of the gang was well down the trail when the rain and lightning got bad enough for us to realize that we should abandon this hike. We made it back to the car, wet but still lightning free, sometime soon after 8:00 if I remember correctly. (someone else will have to fill in the exact time.

We took a group picture less Brian and Chris who snuck out before we got organized enough to take the picture.

I left the memory card out of my camera so I didn't get any pictures, but a few others took pictures and promised to send them to you.

Mike M was heard briefly on 54 as he drove around town.

Unique on this hike was 2 XYL's and a 2 year old.

Josh returned after last week and appears that he will be a regular.

Andy and Melissa enjoyed the hike.

Since I had give a noontime talk to the L3 ham club, I had a lot of microwave gear in the back of my car and after we returned to the cars I drug a little of it out to show a couple of the folks who were interested in seeing it.

Hope you are feeling better. Nothing feels worse than feeling badly.

Talk to you next week.

73

Ron

Additional comments:

From Bruce, KI7OM:

Bruce mentioned later that, along the way up, a familiar group was met coming down - one that he'd seen the week before on the way to the Salt Lake overlook.  As it turns out, a large group of Varian employees have also taken to going on Wednesday Night hikes as well:  Either they are far more fit than we are, or they start an hour or so earlier...
From Andy, KE7UQO:
Clint, The hike was thoroughly enjoyable, if short lived. We missed you. My wife and I are planning on coming this Wednesday...

If you'd like a few more, let me know and I'll send some over when I get home. I also have the GPS tracklog in garmin format, showing us chugging up the mountain, and rocketing down it when the lightning hit. Thanks,

Maps/profiles (from 2009):

About Circle-All Peak
No-one is exactly sure of the name's origin, but Gordon, who spoke with Charles Keller himself, said this:
"Mr. Keller believes that the Circle All Slide Area got its name because of how the slides behave. They come roaring down the north side of the canyon with enough energy that they go back up the south side some distance. That creates a secondary slide that comes back down and the two create something like a circle in the canyon bottom."
None of the above information is from the book "The Lady in the Ore Bucket" by Charles Keller.
