Night
Hike
September 15, 2004
Green's Basin
(a.k.a. Green's Meadow)
Weather: Few clouds, cool
temperature.
Present were: Mike, K7DOU and
friend Nancy; Gordon, K7HFV; Clint, KA7OEI
Destination: To Green's Meadow.
(Via
a tributary trail a short distance up Day's Fork)
Question of the day: "What
kind of tree is that?" Gordon gave Nancy a brief lecture on
how
to tell various species of fir trees apart. (Of course, it's
the
needles, cones, and bark that tell...)
Total distance: Approx. 2.68
miles (including crossing the meadow and going a short distance
into
the trees at the far end.)
Times: Depart Vehicle:
1839; Depart Day's Fork Trail: 1856; Arrive at
meadow:
1924; Depart meadow: 1945; Rejoin Day's Fork
trail:
2012; Return to vehicle: 2025
Altitudes in feet ASL (approx):
Parking: 7370; Turnoff from Day's Fork trail to
meadow:
7630; Meadow: 8350 (USGS data)
Elevation gain/loss (approx):
980 feet
Local sunset on this date:
7:36 pm (12 minutes lost over the past week.)
Images (150-824k
each,
.JPG):
A low picture count this time - and
none
that are (in my opinion) particularly striking:
-
IMG01427 - A
patch
of sunlit mountain on the other side of the canyon, as viewed from the
trail to the meadow.
-
IMG01428 -
Green's
Basin. Similar is #1430. A
view
from the other end of the basin is #1433h.
-
IMG01431h -
Mike
(left) and Gordon. This isn't a very good picture (as
Gordon's
eyes are closed - even though there was no flash) but it's the only one
taken on this hike with people in it...
Maps/profiles:
-
GPS track of the
hike
- The recorded GPS track of the hike. Note:
There
was inconsistent GPS lock due to terrain blockage and tree cover
resulting
in position/track errors.
-
Elevation profile
of the
hike - The elevation profile of the hike. Due to
inconsistent
GPS lock (especially near the destination) elevation data was
spotty.
Because of this, the GPS-derived elevation at the meadow was not
recorded
accurately. The USGS data shows the elevation to be about 8350 at
the meadow.
-
A more detailed
GPS track
- A more-detailed map with the GPS track of the hike plus the
surrounding
landmarks. As with the other map, this track shows the
position/track
errors due to inconsistent GPS lock.
-
K7DOU's GPS
track
- Mike's receiver held a more consistent lock and here
is the track from it.
Notes:
The trail and time of day (and sunset
times)
tended not to make this hike particularly photogenic. The tree
cover
along the trail effectively obscures many of the potentially good views
across the canyon while the lay of the land and angle of the sun
conspired
to make the meadow devoid of any alpenglow at sunset on this
date.
Despite these photographic shortcomings, this hike is one well-suited
for
the minimal daylight remaining.
After the hike (it was just short of
8:30 pm)
the group went up the canyon and had a pleasant dining experience at
the
Silver Fork Lodge restaurant. (We learned that 3 shrimp are
officially
allocated to the Cajun Pasta dish - a fact learned when Nancy mentioned
to our waiter that she'd only found two... To be fair, they did
bring
3 more.)
Comments:
-
If you want one (or more) of these
images
and wish some sort of adjustment (color, brightness, exposure, etc.)
please
let me know: All of these image have been processed in some way.
-
These images are 150-824k in size,
.JPG and
are in chronological order.
-
No-one ever said that all of these
images
(or any of them) were good. Some of them may have definite
focus/exposure
"issues."
-
EXIF data is present for most of the
images,
showing time, date, and precise exposure conditions. Recent
versions
of Irfanview will show this in
the "View->Image Information->EXIF" tab. Note that
cropping/noise
reduction required the use of another program which may have removed
some/most
of this EXIF data.
-
Images suffixed with "h" are
half-size.
This was done for images that were somewhat out of focus (due to
misfocus
or camera movement associated with long shutter times) or those that
required
some extra noise reduction and thus lost some detail anyway.
-
All images taken using a Sigma SD-10
camera
using the 18-50mm zoom lens.
